About Melissa Stevens, LPC
Welcome!
As a therapist, I treat a wide range of concerns using an eclectic treatment approach. My primary specialty areas are post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD or C-PTSD, childhood trauma or developmental trauma, women’s issues, women’s empowerment, and survivors of domestic violence. I tailor my treatment approach to each unique person that I work with and I look forward to helping you live a life imbued with meaningful connections, peace, growth and healing.
I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), sand play therapy, and EMDR sand tray protocol. Other approaches I may use include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).
I am a calm, empathic and observant person who will hold an open, non-judgmental space for you to share your thoughts and emotions. I am a deep listener and excel at helping my clients find meaning in their experiences and their lives.
During my time as a therapist, I have worked in multiple types of treatment settings including outpatient programs and practices, intensive outpatient programs, and partial hospitalization programs. The most transformative of these experiences was working as a trauma therapist in a shelter for survivors of domestic violence. It was during this time in my career that I was trained in EMDR therapy and saw first hand the power and efficacy EMDR held for healing trauma and other emotional disturbances. Around that same time, I was also trained in sand play therapy with a basis in Jungian analysis and archetypal psychology. EMDR therapy and sand play therapy became integral parts of my treatment approach, which I continue to use today.
I have a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. I have been a licensed counselor since 2013 and have worked in various settings across the field of mental health since 2009.
I am licensed to practice in Virginia and New Jersey providing telehealth only.
